Roots and Ritual is a mother-daughter owned shop in Chicago.

We’re all about offering more than just a shop—think of it as a cozy third space where you can hang out, relax, and connect. At the heart of what we’re doing is a shared love for community, creativity, and intentionality. This isn’t just a business to us—it’s a space to celebrate magic, connection, and help bring ritual into our everyday lives. Right now, we're balancing our full-time jobs while spending weekends in the shop, planning events and classes, and fulfilling online orders.

We can’t wait to welcome you in! Read more about us below:

Heather (she/her): While growing up in Massachusetts I visited Salem for the first time with my Mom and Nana around the age of 7. One of the attractions we went to was a reenactment of the witch trials. During the reenactment, the "witch" addressed the court, pointed, and accused someone in the audience of being a witch. I was 100% convinced she pointed at me. I spent the next few weeks, unsuccessfully, trying to cast a spell by twitching my nose (thanks, Samantha Stevens). Fast forward to my late teens/early 20s and I bought my first two books on witchcraft: Drawing Down the Moon by Margot Adler and Power of the Witch by Laurie Cabot. My first tarot deck followed soon after. Over the past few decades, while not always practicing, magic has always had significant importance in my life.

Madi (she/they): I grew up loving Sabrina the Teenage Witch and The Craft, “borrowing” my mom’s witchy books in high school, and reading tarot for friends in college just for fun. Over time, my practice became more intentional - I started learning from some of my favorite witches and eventually offered donation-based tarot readings. With over a decade of experience in nonprofits and social work, I’m passionate about creating a space where everyone feels welcome. Whether I’m pulling tarot cards, making ritual oils, or helping curate our book selection, my goal is to help people tap into their own magic and feel at home in the space.
